The West Holmes athletic boosters have announced the dates for their 4th annual cake auction, so be sure to mark your calendar so that you can attend.
The cake auction, which began just 3 years ago, was the brain child of Booster President Rob Hunter as an unusual way to raise funds for the club’s general fund. The general fund is then used to help support all of our sporting teams here at West Holmes, especially when a need arises that cannot be met by the school district or the athletic department.
Last year’s event garnered a staggering $16,750.00 over a 2 night event, which saw the girls team selling cakes at a boys varsity game and the boys teams parading their cakes for sell on a girls night.
The whole concept behind this event is to make each head coach responsible for a cake that represents their sport or team. This can also be used as a team building opportunity and a way to get their team members involved with the process. In some cases, the team members themselves actually make and decorate the cakes to be auctioned and in others, the coaches simply make the arrangements for the finished product for the event. In either case, the student-athletes take great pride in their team’s cake and carry them onto the floor while they are being auctioned off. The kids actually look forward to seeing all of the cakes and are excited for to be a apart of this evening.
The boosters feel that partnering with the coaches, and kids, have turned this fundraiser into something that is fun and serves as a way to get everyone involved in an event that benefits them all anyway.
This year, the girls teams will be up first and will plan to sell their cakes on January 6th at the boys game vs. Ashland. Cakes for sale that evening will represent: Basketball, Softball, Tennis, Volleyball, Cross Country, Track, Cheerleading and Soccer.
The boys teams will then take their turn showing off their baked goods during the girls game here on January 26th vs. Lexington. Teams being represented on that evening will be: Golf, Football, Soccer, Cross Country, Basketball, Wrestling, Baseball, Track and Tennis.
The schedule of sale is completely random and will be determined by draw, however, the first half will be auctioned between the JV and varsity game and then the remainder at half time of that same game.
So plan to come out that night and purchase, or at least bid, on a cake to support your favorite West Holmes sports team. Even if you don’t want to purchase a cake, just being here to witness the event is entertainment itself.
Again, ALL funds go the booster club general fund to help support West Holmes athletics and ALL of our sporting teams!
