The West Holmes Knights track athletes who qualified for State went there with hopes of showing everyone how hard they had worked. Each athlete who competed at State was able to prove just that.
In the preliminary races, the boys 4×200 relay team of Michael Taylor, Brady Taylor, Jonathon Kandel and Brayden Chaney positioned themselves to race on Saturday in the finals with a time of 1:29.99. The boys 4×400 relay team of Michael Taylor, Jonathon Kandel, Travett Boughman and Brayden Chaney continued to improve by breaking their previous record this year and moving on to finals with a time of 3:20.47. Brayden Chaney took control of his heat in the 400 meter dash and finished 1st with a time of 48.23 seconds. Each preliminary performance put the athletes where they wanted to be on finals day.
Madison Kandel lead off finals in girls Shot Put and finished 10th overall with a toss of 37 feet, 2.75 inches. The boys 4×200 relay team exceeded expectations as they came in seeded 8th and earned a 4th place finish with a time of 1:29.65. Following up the 4×200 race, Brayden Chaney ran an incredible race and finished 2nd in the 400 meter dash by a recording setting time of 47.56 seconds. Next up was Katie Sprang who made history by becoming the first freshman to podium in an individual event. She did so by placing 7th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:17.03. Ending the day in exciting fashion, the boys 4×400 relay team placed 2nd with a time of 3:21.33.
The boys track team also made history by finishing 7th overall with 21 points.
