Boys Varsity Wrestling · Woods Finishes Second at State Wrestling Tournament

Cael Woods finished second at the state wrestling tournament this past weekend.  Woods (Jr., 113) came up shy in his bid for a state championship dropping a heartbreaking 4 – 2 sudden victory decision to returning two-time state champion, three time state placer, and Ohio State signee Jacob Decatur (Sr., Cuyahoga Falls Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) in the title match. Woods and Decatur were tied up 2 – 2 after regulation sending the championship match into the 1:00 minute sudden victory period where first points scored wins the match. Unfortunately, Woods’ season ended with a state runner-up finish. But, Woods earned his third ‘All Ohio’ honor and finishes his junior campaign with a sparking 47 – 1 mark.

Woods put the exclamation point on his march to a state title opportunity scoring a 18 – 3 tech fall victory over Caleb Hernandez (Sr., Napoleon) in a championship semifinal match Friday evening and began the day with an impressive 11 – 4 decision victory over Dierre Clayton (Soph., Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) in the morning championship quarterfinals. Woods started his tournament flattening Jacob Bryan (Soph., Cincinnati Wyoming) at 5:24 Thursday afternoon.
